What's in a badge?

Basic EOD


Around the world, military personal and police officers wear accoutrements on their uniforms. Each of these represents a significate thing. These badges and patchs are symbols of the hard work and dedication by these officers and soldiers. All are hard earned and proudly worn.


The Meaning of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.

The WREATH is symbolic of the achievements and laurels gained in minimizing accident potentials, through the ingenuity and devotion to duty of its members. It is in memory of those EOD officers and military personnel who gave their lives.

The BOMB is copied from the design of the WWII Bomb Disposal Badge. It represents the historic and major objective of the EOD attack, the unexploded bomb. The three fins represent the mojor areas of nuclear, conventional and chemical/biological interest.

The LIGHTNING BOLTS symbolize the potential destructive power of the bomb and the courage and professionalism of EOD personnel in their endeavors to reduce hazards as well as to render explosive ordnance harmless.

The SHIELD represents the EOD mission -- prevent a detonation and protect the surrounding area and property to the utmost.

Although on this page you will see the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge in color, the soldiers continue to wear the silver EOD badge on their class A or dress uniform and a black or subdued EOD badge on their BDU's or basic duty uniform. The colored EOD badge is used for awards, pamphlets and the like.
Basic EOD

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge is issued to graduates of the EOD course of instruction. They must also be assigned to an EOD position. Service in this position must be satisfactory for a period of 18 months for the award to be permanent. Officers must hold a special skill identifier of 91E, enlisted must hold an occupational speciality 55D.


Senior EOD

The Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge is issued to soldiers that have been awarded the basic EOD badge with 36 months of cumulative service in an EOD position following the award of the basic EOD badge. EOD qualifications must be current at the time of recommendation for the award.


Master EOD

The Master Explosive Ordnance Badge is issued to soldiers with the Senior EOD badge, that have 60 months of cumulative service in an EOD position also following the issue of the Senior EOD badge. The immediate commander must recommend the soldier for the award. EOD qualifications must be current.
